Esomeprazole is an acid-base blocker. It works by blocking an enzyme that plays a role in the production of certain chemicals in the body. It also helps to lower the pH and the amount of acid produced. It is used for the short term relief of certain symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and to prevent the regurgitation of food (reflux) caused by acid reflux. It is not a cure for these conditions.
The action of esomeprazole (NEXIUM) is due to its ability to inhibit the action of a chemical called P-glycoprotein. This protein is the major component of the gastric and duodenal lining which help protect the stomach and duodenum from acid. When P-glycoprotein is overexpressed, it blocks the action of the enzyme that is normally produced by the cells lining the stomach and duodenum. This action leads to the blocking of the production of many chemicals that cause inflammation in the lining of the stomach and duodenum.
When P-glycoprotein is bound to P-mlastase, it is broken down, and this leads to the breakdown of the entire gastric and duodenal mucosa. This leads to the accumulation of mucus, which becomes trapped within the duodenum leading to the leakage of food into the stomach. Esomeprazole (NEXIUM) blocks the actions of the enzyme that is normally produced by the cells lining the stomach and duodenum.
